WEC's "Razor" Rob McCullough recovering from surgery, seeks late fall return
Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com Former WEC lightweight champion "Razor" Rob McCullough (17-5 MMA, 8-3 WEC), expected to miss the remainder of 2009 following two surgeries on his right hand, may be ready to return to action sometime this fall. MMAagents' Nate Brodnax told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) his client was recovering from the injury ahead of schedule and will seek a bout in the WEC as soon as September, though October or November appears a more likely date. McCullough needed the surgeries after breaking his hand in a March split-decision win over Marcus Hicks. The WEC is rumored to be holding an event in September, though nothing has yet been officially announced by the organization. Brodnax said McCullough was looking to return to action as quickly as possible, though the September event may prove too early. McCullough was the WEC's lightweight champion prior to a third-round TKO loss to current champ Jamie Varner in February 2008. McCullough also lost a November 2008 decision to current No. 1 contender Donald Cerrone, who is currently slated to fight Benson Henderson at the as-yet-unannounced September event. McCullough also mixed in the victory over Hicks, as well as a split-decision win over Kenneth Alexander, during his past four contests. While just 2-2 in that span, McCullough had put together a nine-fight winning streak before his recent .500 stretch. His sooner-than-anticipated return to action will provide further depth to the WEC's lightweight division, currently on hold while awaiting on the return of Varner, also recovering from a hand injury. MMA Fighters Say "Knock Out Dog Fighting"
Originally posted on BleacherReport.com Of course the picture I have chosen is a of a Boxer and not a Pit Bull. It is a picture of a dog that has been loved by a little girl with an imagination much like I had when I was very young. My dogs were members of my special front porch tea parties, had their own birthday cakes with all of my friends invited to their parties, Christmas stockings and presents, and were often entered in costume contests and or dressed up as babies and given rides in my brother's big blue baby buggy. Some of you reading this may shudder when hearing of the indignities my pets endured, but no one can ever accuse me of putting one of my very best friends in a dog fight. Fortunately, several MMA fighters such as Andre Arlovski, Tito Ortiz, Josh "the Punk" Thompson, Razor Rob McCullough, and Cung Le, among others, have joined forces within a group called "Knock Out Dog Fighting." Since all of these MMA fighters love man's best friend, they are trying to see an end to the brutal sport of dog fighting. Quick Strikes: Spanning World of MMA
Originally posted on MMA.fanhouse.com - Heavyweight Brett Rogers is keeping himself ready for a potential fight on the upcoming June 6 Strikeforce event in St. Louis. As of Friday morning, Rogers' involvement on the card is not official, as Strikeforce is looking for a suitable opponent for him. The former EliteXC fighter was once rumored to be fighting current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, but thus far, no deal has been reached. Right now, there is one slot to be filled on the Showtime portion of the card, as the Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Jared Hamman fight has been moved to the non-televised undercard. - Former WEC lightweight champion "Razor" Rob McCullough, pictured right, underwent a second surgery to repair his broken right hand on Thursday. McCullough injured the hand in his most recent victory against Marcus Hicks at WEC 39 in March. It appears as though he will now be out of action for the remainder of the calendar year. - Female fighter Erin Toughill returns to action tonight at Palace Fighting Championship 13 in Lemoore, Calif., against Emily Thompson. According to Toughill's agent, Ken Pavia, she has an offer on the table to join Strikeforce's stable of female fighters. "While we're weighing all our options, Strikeforce is a very attractive one," Pavia told FanHouse. Toughill was originally offered to fight Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos on the April 11 Strikeforce card, but wanted a little more time to train for one of the best female fighters in the world. - And finally, War Machine (born Jon Koppenhaver) is considering an offer from the War Gods promotion to compete on their upcoming June 20 card. The event takes place in San Diego, which is where War Machine currently lives and trains. Since his release from the UFC last spring, he has won his last three fights in a row. No potential opponent has been announced. War Machine fighting on a War Gods card seems like a pretty natural fit. ‘Razor’ Rob McCullough to enter VH1s Celebrity Rehab: ‘Sex Addiction’ with Dr. Drew

VH1 also put out a nine episode program earlier this year titled, “Sober House” which was centered around “sober living” … the next step in addiction. The timing for McCullough choosing to overcome his “addiction” couldn’t be better. Razor Bounces Back with Decision Victory
Originally posted on MMAweekly.com McCullough, who put in his first non-Huntington Beach training camp at Xtreme Couture, readied himself for a hyper-aggressive Hicks, whose style would play perfectly into his punch-heavy countering. Hicks, however, had a different idea. Instead of charging McCullough, he inched forward for much of the fight. Content to box, he surprised the former WEC lightweight champion with an unpredictable left hand. One minute, it would loop in, and the next, it would come straight. Eventually, the “Wrecking Ball” cornered his man against the cage. But McCullough’s takedown defense was solid, and the two stalemated against the cage. They were twice separated from the referee for failing to advance position. McCullough realized he would not be taken down, and began to let his kicks go. In the second, he connected with a liver kick that wounded the stout lightweight. Retreating to the edge of the cage, Hicks caught several punch combinations, but snapped McCullough with another left hand that stopped the advance. By the third, the two men had gained little ground on each other. However, McCullough showed greater ring generalship, landing several kicks to the leg and body, gunning for a high kick knockout. When another Hicks shot failed, McCullough turned up the pressure, but was unable to put together any combinations to end the fight. The first judge saw the bout as a draw, 29 apiece, while one gave all rounds to McCullough, 30-27. The final judge gave Hicks a round, with a 29-28 score for the former champ, giving him a majority decision victory. Click here to read the entire article at MMAweekly.comLabels: Rob McCullough

WEC 39 Preview
Originally posted on MMAweekly.com “Razor” Rob McCullough vs. Marcus Hicks Former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough faces off with lightweight title challenger Marcus Hicks. Both fighters are coming off a loss and need a win to gain some momentum after an up and down 2008. These two like to bang it out on the feet, so expect them to trade some serious leather trying to regain some of their former glory. McCullough is known for his technical kickboxing ability that enabled him to become the WEC lightweight champion. Hicks is no slouch on the feet either with a vaunted boxing ability that added to a solid ground game to garner a title shot. If the fight were to go to the ground, he would have a huge advantage over McCullough, who is still learning the ground game. McCullough should have a slight edge on the feet because his is more versatile with his striking than Hicks, who tends to stick to boxing. McCullough will need to avoid the takedown and start picking apart Hicks with kicks and combinations, while ducking Hicks' hooks on the feet. For Hicks to win the fight, he’ll need to take it to the ground and lock on a submission. Whoever wins the fight will instantly put himself back into title contention. McCullough Expects Fast and Furious at WEC 39
Originally posted on MMAweekly.com Two years ago, “Razor” Rob McCullough didn’t really care whether he was a champion or not. He fought for money, and because he was good at it. “I have enough belts to start a department store,” he tells MMAWeekly.com. But when the most meaningful belt of his eight-year career left him – the WEC lightweight belt – and slid further away in a bid to regain it, his priorities shifted. There was pressure from passers-by, and his pride took a little hit. More than that, he says, the belt was a “good commodity.” “Now, it makes me a little more hungry,” he says. “I know I’m good enough to be up there doing this, I’ve had it before, and I’ve been there.” McCullough had two choices: fight through his plateau in comfortable surroundings, or put himself on unfamiliar ground. The 31-year-old faces the stout "Wrecking Ball" Marcus Hicks at WEC 39 on March 1, and for the first time in his career, he will place his faith in fighters other than his usual Huntington Beach crew. In January, McCullough moved to Las Vegas to join Xtreme Couture. He would not, as before, tire out his training partners. There were no kickboxing classes to teach. He was just another guy in the gym. Click here to read the entire article at MMAweekly.comLabels: Rob McCullough
Razor-Sharp Choices
Originally posted on 5thRound.com Just over a year ago, “Razor” Rob McCullough was the face of the WEC’s lightweight division. He was riding a nine-fight winning streak, and thanks to the bad boy image that his Team Punishment camp possessed, he held an aura of invincibility. Things have since changed drastically for the fallen champ, forcing him to make some tough decisions. After dropping two of his last three bouts, which included losing his title to Jaime Varner last year at WEC 32, McCullough realized that changes needed to be made. After taking a long look in the mirror, he decided that he needed to get back to why he started fighting in the first place. “I always fought for fun – I did it because I loved to do it, and I always made sure that it was something that I didn’t have to do,” McCullough stated. “I made sure I made money personal training or teaching classes, so it never took the fun out of it for me. But as my paychecks grew, I started going ‘wow, this really is my career.’ And I’m getting older and I know I can’t do this forever, so coming off a loss, even though it was a great fight and got fight of the night, I knew I had to get back on the title track, so I had to change something up.” Click here to read the entire article at 5thRound.comLabels: Rob McCullough
WEC 39 Predictions
Originally posted on MMAforReal.com Rob McCullough vs. Marcus Hicks Kelvin Hunt-I'm very interested in this fight. Classic striker vs. grappler for the most part. As long as McCullough stays away from the guillotine of Hicks I think he'll be fine. However, Hicks has straight titanium in his chin as we saw against Jamie Varner. He'll be at a reach disadvantage and I think McCullough could put Hicks away to right this ship as far as his career goes. WEC 39 predictions and preview for ‘Brown vs Garcia’
Originally posted on MMAmania.com 155 lbs.: “Razor” Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus “The Wrecking Ball” Hicks (8-1) Both these guys have solid wrestling, as well as quick and powerful hands. They’re both explosive and they can both end fights with their hands or with submissions. This is probably the toughest fight on the card to judge. McCullough’s hit a bit of a dry spell recently, losing two of his last three fights, but to be fair, both of those fights were to top level competition and both were extremely competitive. In his most recent loss to Donald Cerrone, his chin was tested numerous times and he probably gained a lot of self confidence from that fight in that regard. That might not necessarily be a good thing against Hicks though. Hicks hits like a truck. If Razor Rob gets too comfortable in the pocket and leaves himself open, Marcus definitely has the power to put him to sleep. McCullough knows what’s at stake here though — he needs a win more than he needs an impressive win. Hicks’ stamina hasn’t really been tested yet. He’s never even been out of the second round. Meanwhile, Razor Rob’s last two fights have both gone to a decision. The longer the fight goes on, therefore, the more it should favor McCullough. Look for him to take sort of a Josh Koscheck approach to Diego Sanchez, where he’ll keep his distance and try to pick his spots, scoring points on his feet while adding some late round take down attempts for icing. Whether that plan will work against the “Wrecking Ball” or not is another story. Final prediction: McCullough via unanimous decision Click here to read the entire article at MMAmania.comLabels: Rob McCullough

Rob McCullough expecting different results at WEC 39
Post and Photo Courtesy of MMAjunkie.com Things have changed for Rob McCullough (16-5 MMA, 7-3 WEC) since September 2007. A first-round TKO win that month over Rich Crunkilton was McCullough's ninth-straight win and he was 13-1 in his past 14 bouts. "When you have the belt and you know you're the top dog in the game at that point, you think to yourself, 'What I'm going to learn from anybody?'" McCullough recently told TAGG Radio (www.tagradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). McCullough readily admits that he had grown complacent, and that it was that attitude that led to a 1-2 record in his next three fights. "Sure you're going to have a trainer to help you keep sharp at stuff, but at that point I had the belt and I was doing my thing," McCullough said. "I wasn't doing it because I wanted to be the champ. I was doing it because I wanted to make enough money to buy a house. Along the way I got a belt and I was like, 'Cool.'" When he lost that belt to Jamie Varner in February 2008, then lost to Donald Cerrone in November 2008, McCullough decided it was time for a change. The California resident changed things up by preparing for Sunday night's "WEC 39: Brown vs. Garcia" bout with Marcus Hicks at Las Vegas' Xtreme Couture. "I sat back and I realized, 'Hey, you know what? I should change up my training,'" McCullough said. "'Maybe I'll get a different result.' The training out at Couture's is super-structured and it's high-caliber guys. It's pretty intense. It's fun." McCullough said his "WEC 2008 Fight of the Year" nominated bout with Cerrone proved to him the time was right to make the adjustment. "After my last fight with Cerrone I sat back and I said, 'You know what? I left it all in the cage that night,'" McCullough said. "'I did the best I could have done for my camp with the guys that I had with me. "'The money's there right now. I don't have to worry about teaching class and stuff. Why don't I get out on the road and get a good trainer and take the responsibilities of me putting together my own camp and put it in someone else's hands if I have the money to pay for it?' So that's what I did. "And I thought to myself, 'Who would be a good guy for that?' (Xtreme Couture striking coach) Shawn Tompkins, he's got (Mark) Hominick, he's got (Chris) Horodecki, he's got all these good [lightweights] that are all good at punching and kicking. That's my forte, and Las Vegas isn't that bad." McCullough said his time at Xtreme Couture has been fruitful. Click here to read the entire article at MMAjunkie.comLabels: Rob McCullough
